Art Appreciation - The BLACKOUT Tour, Uraeus & Mshindo Kuumba I.

On April 15th, 2012 at the Bridgeport Art Center, activist/artist Turtel Onli hosted a meet  and greet reception of two talented forces; Uraeus and Mshindo Kuumba I.

Uraeus is a writer/publisher of an acclaimed literary property called Jaycen Wise, who in Uraeus’ own words ‘is an immortal warrior / scholar  hailing from The Golden Ages of Antiquity.  Jaycen Wise battles the forces of darkness and ignorance to spread knowledge, wisdom and peace.  Uraeus explained that his inspiration for Jaycen Wise evolved from bedtime stories he would tell his sons, tired of the fairytales/stories that lack any mention of African Culture or history.  In a figurative and literal sense, Uraeus and Jaycen Wise share the same mission.  The latest project is called Jaycen Wise: Way Of The Warrior.  In addition, Uraeus has introduced a new hero worthy of her own book called Indigo: Essence of The Assassin.  I won’t say anymore about it just pick it up.

Uraeus has a perfect creative partner, the creative talent of Master Illustrator and Visionary, Mshindo Kuumba I.

Mshindo has illustrated hundreds of images for books, animation and much more.  For his creator owned project, Anikulapo (He Has Death In His Pocket), Mshindo has used his artistry to craft a story around a very imposing hero which promises to be a must have graphic novel for 2012.

Uraeus & Mshindo complete their creative trinity, with Charlie ‘Fab’ Goublie, an amazing artist/publisher as well.  Charlie has his own space opera project entitled, Corsairs.  These three artists, unite as co-contributors to their projects and conduct the BLACKOUT Tour.  From city to city, con to con the BLACKOUT Tour has been a vehicle for promotion.

Onli Studios was host location and guests had the opportunity to mingle with the artists.  Fresh snacks and intimate conversations about art and life, were on the menu and if you were there, your soul was well fed.

Stay tuned and look out for each of their project in 2012 and beyond, you will not be disappointed.  For more info on the artists, please visit the links below and support.

Black Comic Book Day: Of Celebration & Creativity

Turtel Onli

Black Comic Book Day (BCBD) is a yearly and national celebration and promotion of African-American comic book writers and artists. It began on February 12, 2011 with the First Annual and was hosted in three major cities, Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit. BCBD was created by Father of The Black Age Of Comics, artist/writer Turtel Onli of Onli Studios, as well as Jerry Craft, creator of an award winning comic strip, Mama’s Boys.

This year, on February 12, 2012 BCBD was held in Atlanta, Chicago and New York and was a great success for the Black Age Of Comics Movement.  From workshops on the art and business to the many vendors and unique literary products, Black Comic Book Day is great way to expand the market of each artist by educating new and current fans of their works.  Expanding the awareness of Black Comic Book artists & writers will undoubtedly expand the reach & cultural importance of the art; opening new doors of opportunity & financial gains.

If you didn’t make it out and want more details about the events & upcoming events that celebrate and promote the creative works of African / African-American Artists, due visit the links below and prepare to be informed, entertained and inspired.

BLACKCOMIX

It’s time for a Black Super Hero!
Truth be told, its always been time.
From the pages of history; written and unwritten to the achievements and gifts given to the world; celebrated and otherwise ignored – there has always been heroes. Ah but for Black superheroes, you maybe familiar with some but trust me, there are many, many more! This weekend starting tomorrow, C2E2 is in town. The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) is in town at The Lakeside Center in The McCormick Place to highlight industry professionals and their unique comic artwork. Black Comix, a creative movement headed by art and comic creators Damian Duffy and John Jennings have a panel at C2E2 called
BLACK COMIX: AFRICAN AMERICAN INDEPENDENT COMICS, ART & CULTURE, and will take place in room E352 on Saturday, April 17 from 5:15PM – 6:15PM. On a mission to educate and entertain on the art, culture, vibrancy of a growing surge of talent, the panel and their discussion will help spread the word about overlooked Black comics and their creators. The panel is scheduled to include; comics scholar Stanford Carpenter and comics creators Ashley A. Woods (Millennia War), Jiba Anderson (The Horsemen), and Turtel Onli (Malcolm-10, Sustah Girl).
Yes, of course you’ve heard of Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and Batman but come out and learn about Ogun, Hannah, Dziva Jones, Malcolm-10 and others.

Peace, Power & Prosperity To All The Creators!
